Major League Baseball

● original essay ●

Today, Ichiro a Major League Baseball outfielder for the Seattle Mariners becomes second-fastest to 2,000 hits in Major League Games. When I watched the news of Ichiro on a TV, I was reminding that I was hooked on watching games of Yankees about 20 years ago.

While I was learning English at a language school in America, I usually watched sports games Baseball, Ice hockey, Basketball, Boxing and Wrestling on TV because I could enjoy watching them with my poor English. (But about American football games, I watched them only few times, because I didn’t understand a rule of football well.) I cheered my favorite teams, Yankees, Rangers, Knicks, WWE and WCW with loud voice, in front of TV and stadiums. Actually, at that time Yankees wasn’t strong, but I didn’t care and kept cheering. I specially liked Steve Sax, a second baseman.

After I came back to Japan, while I was watching a baseball game I noticed a difference a way of counting. I’m not sure, but American people usually say “count 3-2” when it’s the time 2 strikes and 3 balls. But in Japan, the number of strikes comes first like “count 2-3”. Before I went to America learning English I didn’t watch baseball games in Japan, so I didn’t know the difference between the ways of counting.

That remains me, “Legend of Doom (L.O.D. for short)” a professional wrestling tug team in WWE had been called “Road Warriors” in Japan. They were so cool, whatever they had been called “L.O.D.” or not.
